What is TIN?

TIN stands for Taxpayer Identification Number. It is an 11 digit unique number given by Commercial Tax Department of the respective state. TIN Number is used to recognize the dealers who registered under VAT. TIN number is called VAT number when we use it for intrastate sales. And the TIN number is considered as CST number when we need it. It is compulsory to mention TIN Number in all  VAT transactions and correspondence.

Who needs the TIN Number?

Manufacturers, Traders, Dealers and Exporters must need TIN number registration. When you do business, you need this number to pay Tax. All state Commercial Tax Department has decided to give new TIN to existing Manufacturers, Traders, Dealers and Exporters to replace their old registration/ CST number. You have to get this number when your turnover crosses 5 lac in a year.

There is no difference in CST/VAT/TIN. Because nowadays only one number is required for all type of sales. You must need this TIN number, When you want to sell your products at online shopping sites such as Flipkart, Amazon, Snapdeal, Myntra, etc. If you want to become a seller or merchant on those online shopping sites, you need the TIN number.

Required documents to apply for TIN

  • Address proof of the proprietor like Aadhar Card or Driving License or Passport.
  • Identity proof like PAN card which is compulsory to register all kind of business.
  • Address proof of business premises like rental agreement or electricity bill.
  • PAN card of the proprietor along with 4-6 passport size photographs.
  • Surety/security/reference.
  • First sale/Purchase Invoice/copy of LR/GR and Collection/payment proof with the bank statement.

How to apply for TIN Number Online?

You can get TIN Number through VAT registration

  1. Go to https://ctd.tn.gov.in/Portal/.  You can see a page like this
  2. Click on “New User? Sign Up”.  tin-1
  3. Select “New Applicant / Existing Dealer” for user type.
  4. Select “No” option which is the answer to “Do you have a TIN?”. Then enter the required details and click “Submit”.tin-2
  5. A small box will open with question “Do you want to Submit Sign up Details?”. Click “ok”. tin-3
  6. A new box will open. Read the terms and conditions. Click on the box which is near to “I agree to the terms and conditions mentioned above”. Then click “submit”. tin-4
  7. A new page will open. Then click “back”. tin-5
  8. Go to your Gmail Account. Click on “ Click Here” link to verify your email Id.tin-6
  9. A new page will open. Enter your Email Id, mobile number and verification code which is sent to your registered mobile number. Click “Verify Code”.tin-7
  10. Then your account will be activated. Check password in your Gmail Id. click “back”.tin-8
  11. The homepage will open. Enter login id and password. Then click “Login”.
  12. A new page will open. There you have to change your password. Enter the required details and click “Submit”. Your password will be changed.tin-9
  13. A new screen will open. Click “Re-Login”.
  14. Again you can see a home page.
  15. Enter login id and password. Click “Login”.
  16. A new page will open. Select “e-Registration” from “e-Services”. Then select e-Registration Application from “e-Registration”.
  17. Select “web form” for Select Application.
  18. Select “VAT Registration” for Form Type.
  19. Select “No” for “Do you have intimation to Notice Reference Id?”. Then click “Next”.tin-11
  20. Then the small box will open with the question “Do you want to proceed for Registration?”. Click “Ok” for that question.tin-12
  21. A new page will open. That is the application for TIN (Taxpayer Identification Number). tin-13
  22. Enter the required details and click “Next”. Again you have to enter more details. Then you will get TIN Number.
